Microprism reflective tape: is made by first creating an array of prisms out of clear or colored acrylic or polyester (vinyl). This is the top layer. This layer provides reflectivity and returns light to the source. Color layers return light to the source, but in a different color. This layer is metallized to enhance its reflectivity. Then apply a layer of adhesive to the back and apply a layer of release liner. Due to the heat used in this process, the metallized prism layer does not delaminate. This is especially beneficial in applications such as vehicle graphics or any other where tape may be harshly processed.
Grade Glass Bead Reflective Tape: Metallized carrier film on top begins. Apply glass beads to this layer so that approximately 50% of the beads are embedded in the metallization layer. This gives the beads reflective properties. Then apply a coat of acrylic or polyester on top. This layer can be clear to make a white reflective tape, or it can be tinted to create a different colored reflective tape. Then apply a layer of adhesive to the bottom of the tape and apply a release liner to that layer. It is rolled up, cut to width and sold. Note - the acrylic layer film will not stretch, the polyester layer film will. Because of the heat used in the manufacturing process, engineering-grade films end up being monolayers, so they don't delaminate.
